The historical challenges that the inhabitants still face are many, but the people are resilient and in<strong> 2008 an association was born to help Mouraria flourish again: \u201cRenovar Mouraria\u201d<\/strong>. This association was created by a group of residents and consists of multiple educational and cultural community initiatives that aim to revitalise the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p>Among the several projects that are currently undergoing in \u201cRenovar Mouraria\u201d, there is <strong>\u201c\u201cMourariUP\u201d\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMourariUP\u201d is a <strong>project that offers support to migrant businesses<\/strong>. For two years, the project helped migrants in Mouraria to <strong>create and develop their own businesses.<\/strong> Now, the project aims to follow up on <strong>migrant entrepreneurs<\/strong> to help them develop their full potential through a <strong>collaborative and intercultural community.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMourariUP\u201d is kind of a <strong>business school for migrants<\/strong> that offers<strong> training, bootcamps and a fair to participants<\/strong>. Members of the project can participate in diverse ways: entrepreneurs have the chance to develop their <strong>personal<\/strong> and <strong>professional<\/strong> <strong>skills<\/strong> and <strong>entrepreneurial spirit<\/strong> through the <strong>training<\/strong> offered by <strong>professionals<\/strong>; mentors are allowed to share their knowledge and experience with newly migrant entrepreneurs; facilitators share their knowledge with entrepreneurs through <strong>participative<\/strong> training on entrepreneurship; and <strong>volunteers<\/strong> <strong>support the development<\/strong> of the entire entrepreneurial ecosystem of Mouraria.<\/p>\n<p>According to <strong>Ivan Bustillo, coordinator of the project<\/strong>, \u201c<strong>MourariUP<\/strong>\u201d is a means of <strong>empowering economically<\/strong> some of the <strong>most marginalised groups in the city by helping them to build<\/strong> <strong>tools<\/strong> that allow them to <strong>develop<\/strong> their own<strong> projects and ideas<\/strong>. Bustillo also believes that \u201cMourariUP\u201d is a<strong> great opportunity to empower migrant women<\/strong>, as many of the migrant entrepreneurs that arrive at the project are mostly women linked to domestic work. Ichaa, Francisca and Anabela are great examples of the project\u2019s contribution to the integration and empowerment of migrant businesswomen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ichaa, a 22-year-old young woman from Bangladesh<\/strong>, followed her family to Portugal last year. This year, with the help of her family, she opened a c<strong>lothing store in Mouraria<\/strong> \u2013 Vibe Finery. Her business is part of the \u201cMourariUP\u201d project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Francisca and Anabela created \u201cSabor das Manas\u201d, an events and catering business, in Luanda, Angola<\/strong>. Together with 3 more sisters, they decided to move to Portugal to look for better life conditions and healthcare. The sisters decided to bring African cuisine and culture to Portugal and continue their business in Lisbon. However, they struggled to <strong>adapt to local gastronomy and make their business succeed<\/strong>. After some struggle, they found out about \u201cRenovar a Mouraria\u201d and \u201c\u201cMourariUP\u201d\u201d and learned about the entrepreneurial program training offers, which has helped them <strong>restructure and reframe their business model<\/strong>.
